Music & Lyrics… part 4

•March 11, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Had not heard this one for a while… it poped up on my MP3 player today, and really hit home.

I’ll let the Lyrics speak for themselves… enjoy!

Ozzy Osbourne – I Don’t Wanna Stop

I don’t know what they’re talking about
I’m making my own decisions
This thing that I found ain’t gonna bring me down
I’m like a junkie without an addiction

Mama don’t cry I just wanna stay high
I like playing with danger and fear
Everybody’s walkin’ but nobody’s talkin’
It looks a lot better from here

All my life I’ve been over the top
I don’t know what I’m doing all I know is I don’t wanna stop
All fired up, I’m gonna go ’til I drop
You’re either in or in the way, don’t make me I don’t wanna stop

Why don’t they ever listen to me
It’s just a one way conversation
Nothing they say is gonna set me free
Don’t need no mental masturbation

Too many religions but only one god
I don’t need another saviour
Don’t try to change my mind
You know I’m one of a kind
Ain’t gonna change my bad behaviour

All my life I’ve been over the top
I don’t know what I’m doing all I know is I don’t wanna stop
All fired up, I’m gonna go ’til I drop
You’re either in or in the way, don’t make me I don’t wanna stop
All my life I’ve been over the top
I don’t know what I’m doing all I know is I don’t wanna stop
All fired up, I’m gonna go ’til I drop
You’re either in or in the way, don’t make me I don’t wanna stop

I don’t wanna stop
I don’t wanna stop
I don’t wanna stop
I don’t wanna stop
I don’t wanna stop
I don’t wanna stop
I don’t wanna stop

[SOLO]

All my life I’ve been over the top
I don’t know what I’m doing all I know is I don’t wanna stop
All fired up, I’m gonna go ’til I drop
You’re either in or in the way, don’t make me I don’t wanna stop
All my life I’ve been over the top
I don’t know what I’m doing all I know is I don’t wanna stop
All fired up, I’m gonna go ’til I drop

Queen’s In Sydney

With the arrival of the Queen Mary 2 in Sydney Harbour this morning, it reminded me of the day when both the Queen Mary 2 and the Queen Elizabeth 2 arrived in the harbour on the same day.

I was fortunate enough to catch a ferry that got me right in the think of the action as the QE2 arrived… was a thrilling experinace.

Here are some pictures of the occasion.

Quick Trip To Hobart – New Friends Found

•February 25, 2009 • Leave a Comment

After getting back from Hobart at Christmas, I was really eager to get back there at some stage. But I never thought I’d be going back this quick!!

It turned out that brother Davids birthday fell on a Sat… Sat 31st Jan. I had a chat to Emma (Davids girlfriend) about what their plans were. She said a BBQ at a friends place was planned. I thought to myself… what the hell!!! Flights are so cheap, why not head down for the weekend and surprise David for his birthday! A plan was hatched with Emma & cousin Leigh.

The day arrives… so I plan which trains will get me to the airport on time… but the train breaks down, and I’m stuck on it… no phone reception either… not happy. 20mins I sit there, in a train I cant get out of.. watching my non-refundable airfare to Hobart slip out of my fingers.

After 20mins the train eventually starts moving again. I finally get thru to Jetstar and tell them of my dilemma. They tell me that check-in has closed for that flight. I’m getting angry by now. I arrive at the airport and get to the Jetstar help desk a good 15mins before the aircraft is due to depart… but they tell me I’m too late. Then, to dig the knife in further, a couple who were also late arrive at the help desk, but because they had checked in, where told to hurry to the boarding area!!! I am fucking furious. I’m told there is nothing they can do.

The thing that pissed me off the most was the fact that if they ‘wanted to’ they could of bent the rules just a little to ensure that one of their ‘customers’ got to where they needed to go. The simple fact that I felt like I was treated like a piece of trailer trash was what made me angry. Instead, I’m given some bullshit excuse that the fuel load has already been established and pilots don’t like to change it!! So, they are trying to tell me they only put enough fuel in the aircraft to fly from point A to point B with no allowance for emergencies… what if the aircraft gets nice and close to Hobart and find they have to divert to Launceston because of some issue at Hobart? “Ladies and Gentleman, this is your Captain speaking. Because of <insert what ever reason here> at Hobart airport, we have to ditch in the Derwent because there is not enough fuel to fly to Launceston. Lets all hope I can fly as good as that guy in New York the other week”… total bullshit. So, not only did they treat me like shit, but they lied to me as well!!! I was then told that for an extra $36 they would put me on their next flight to Hobart… at 6.30pm that evening…. getting me to Hobart at 8.30pm… no bloody good. Might as well have stuck my tail between my legs and went home.

I walked across to Virgin and they had a flight in an hours time…. $430 one way!!! I then went to Qantas, and they offered me a flight at 2.30pm, but would go via Melbourne, and would not get me to Hobart until 7pm… not good. Back to Virgin I went and handed over my credit card :(

I arrive in Hobart in a better mood.. simply because I was there… loooove Hobart!!! Cousin Leigh picks me up and drops me outside Davids place. David has no idea I’m there, so I ring him to wish him a happy birthday etc, and tell me that I had arranged a special something that Leigh has left on his front doorstep… IT WAS ME!!!!!!!… he had totally no idea!!! I love surprises!! Happy Birthday Davo!!!

After David got over the shock, it was present time. First of all was some photos I had enlarged from my trip down there at Christmas. Secondly, as David is a bit of a Triple J freak…. I organised to get a Triple J shirt signed by most of the presenters on the J’s. David loved it, he thought it was ‘filthy’!!!

Davos JJJ shirt.. FILTHY!!!

It was then time to head to the BBQ which was being held at friends of David… Rob & Kristy. On the way we picked up one of David’s good mates, Ty. We diverted via the shops to get some supplies, and then headed to the bottle’o.

I decided that I was going to have a quite one, like I always do, so I figured a 6 back of Cougar and coke would more than do me for the arvo/evening. When I entered the bottle’o, I thought I might add a Mudslide to the order. I picked up the Cougar, found the Mudslide… but what’s this I have spied??? It’s a 2 litre cask of Cowboy for $25.00!!!! With no hesitation what so ever, the Mudslide was ditched for the cask of Cowboy. I walked out very happy with my purchase. David thought it was ‘Filthy’!! lol. Does not look like I’ll be having a quite night after all :-)

In the back of the Kombie on the way to the BBQ.

I was very nervous about the impended evening…. Having not met any of Davids friends before, and being a bit older, I was thinking that I might not fit in.. or maybe considered an intruder… all sorts of things where going thru my head. I really had no idea how I would be accepted. My fears were soon turned to mush.

As we were one of the first to arrive, I got to be introduced to everyone has they arrived, which made things a lot easier. All of Davids friends are amazing people. I was welcomed into the group with open arms, and made some great new friends.

View from Rob & Kristy's place.... supurb!!

We drank, played cricket, listened to cool tunes, ate abalone, played more cricket and then, after I finished my last can of Cougar & Coke…. The cask of cowboy came out. It was all downhill from there… but it was fun!!! How far can you get the gooney bag away from ones mouth without missing!! For some, it was not far at all, and for others…well, lets just say that Cowboy up the nose does not work (does it Dave?).

David loosing some of the cowboy after the 'nose incident'.

Overall I had a fantastic time and was well worth the bullshit and cost it took to get down there. I would do it all again in a heart beat! I am now even more looking forward to moving to Tassie. With all these new friends to get to know… I can see my transition to life in Tassie is going to be much easier that expected. A big thank you to all Davo’s friends for welcoming me into the fold, you are all champions!! Also a big thank you goes out to Rob & Kristy for your hospitality…. you are wonderful people.

Heaps of new friends!

Australia Day Long Weekend in Canberra – part 02

After getting the supplies I decided to make a detour on the way to the concert have and a closer look at the Captain Cook Memorial Jet.  Very impressive.

At 5pm I arrived at the concert on the lawns at the front of Parliament House. I contacted Natalie, a colleague from the ABC who had organised the ticket for me. Along with Natalie’s daughter and a few others from the ABC, we were in the ‘mosh pit’ right in front of the stage. Awesome spot!

The evening was a little slow going with lots of breaks between acts. The line up of act included:

Of course is was all about Natalie Bassingthwaighte for me… I guess it’s the groupie in me coming out. Her music, voice and looks… could be the new Kylie!!! (but there will only ever be one Kylie!!)

Natalie Bassingthwaite at Australia Day Concert, Canberra.

I did enjoy the concert, even if it was a tad drawn out. After the concert I said my goodbyes and made my way to Festi Stu’s place.

Had been ages since I had caught of with Stuart. He was kind enough to offer me a bed for the night, but not until we had good old chin wag and catch-up. He even introduced to me to my first ever Lip, Sip & Suck!! Had a ball with Festi Stu… was great to catch up.

The next morning it was Australia Day!! I said my goodbyes to Stu and headed out to the Brindabella’s to catch up with a few of the guys from the Suzuki 4WD Club. It had been many years since I locked the hubs and went 4wd’ing… and I truly loved it.

Unfortunately I did not make it all the way to the Brindabella camp spot the club uses, as I misjudged what time the group would be coming out… so I met them on the track as they were making there way out. I tagged onto the end of the convoy and followed to the spot where we had lunch.

I really thoroughly enjoyed the trip. Locking the hubs again after so many years was very therapeutic. It gave me the bug all over again… so much so that I’m organising a trip the Victorian High Country with an old work colleague. More on that trip later.

After we got back onto the black stuff, the group pulled over so those that needed to could air up their tires. The group more or less broke up from there and we all went out own way. I followed a few others up the freeway to to Sydney and made my way home. I Trully awesome way to spend Australia Day!!

I really did enjoy this weekend away. There is a part of me that loves Canberra, so I’ll be doing my best to make a few more visits before I move to Tassie.

Thanx again to Det, Hemmi & Festi Stu for their hospitality.

Australia Day Long Weekend in Canberra – part 01

•February 7, 2009 • Leave a Comment

I decided that I was not going to spend the Australia Day long weekend on the couch or in front of the computer.

I had not been to Canberra for many years, so decided I would head down there, catch up with some friends and do some touristy stuff.

My intention was to leave at sparrow fart on Saturday morning… I left at 10am… typical me!

I doof doofed all the way to Canberra and went directly to the Mint. Unfortunately the mint is half way through a 2 year refurbishment process, so there was not alot to see, however it was still interesting and I picked up a few trinkets to go with my coin collection. I look forward to going back when the refurbishment has been completed.

Coins purchased at the Royal Australian Mint

From the Mint I took myself the 50 odd km’s to the Deep Space Complex at Tidbinbilla. They have a nice cafe there, so I did partake in lasagne & chips with a milkshake. If you’re into space type stuff, (which I am), you’ll find this place very interesting. There is a full size replica of the Mars Rovers (they are MUCH bigger that I thought), a piece of moon rock and numerous other bits and pieces to do with space and space travel. Very interesting, very informative. I really enjoyed it. Was worth the drive.

It was then time to head to my friends place at Murrenbateman. Det & Hemmi where kind enough to offer me a meal & room for the night, for which I am very grateful.

We chatted for hours, looked at pics of our holidays to Tassie, watched a movie and just generally caught up. I had not seem them for a while… I enjoyed there company very much.

Next morning I said my goodbyes to Det & Hemmi and made my way back to Canberra. First stop was Black Mountain Tower. It’s only $7.50 to get to the top, which I though was a very reasonable price. The view is great from up there, I especially liked the outdoor viewing area. However the facilities leave alot to be desired. The so called cafe was not so good. The range of food was dreadful and over priced. Everything was pre-made, but it was lunch time, I was Hungary, so I had to eat. The only main dish was a pasta and lamb thing in a spicy sauce. I reckon it was left overs from the ala cart restaurant up stairs. It was in the fridge in chinese take away containers and they just heated it up in the microwave… and charge you $14.00. Tasted ok, but nothing to write home about.

Black Mountain Tower, Canberra.

From Black Mountain I headed across to Mount Ainslie, for the view over the War Memorial to the Parliament. I would have liked to shake the hand of Walter Burley Griffin… superb work. If you ever have the opportunity, read up on how Canberra came to be… it is a fascinating story.

I had about an hour to kill before going to the Australia Day Concert on the lawns of Parliament House, so I went for a drive, dont really know where I went, but I know I ended up at a shopping centre in Canberra city, where I got some supplies for the evening at the concert.

I’ve Been to Tassie Too!! part 2

•January 21, 2009 • 1 Comment

….continued from last post….

The next morning was the start of my final day on Bruny Island. Of course I had Chicken Bosciolla on toast for breakfast, followed by a cup of strong coffee.

I packed my things into the Zook and made my way to the north island. Magnificent views along the way and lots of dirt roads. By this time I was getting to know the Zook and all it’s special ways. It loves the higher revs… so for about 10kms of winding dirt road, the windows came down and I went for it… what a blast, slipping and sliding all over the place. A great little car :)

The little beast Suzuki Sierra

Apart from the magnificent scenery, there really isn’t much to do on the north section of Bruny Island. It’s not very ‘toursity’, but it is worth the drive to to top of the island if only for the view towards Hobart and Mt Wellington. You can go right to the waters edge in a 4WD or leave your sedan on the bitumen and take a short walk. I think I was there for about 90 mins, taking photos or just sitting back and taking in the serenity. Very bloody nice.

Just one of the great views from the top of Bruny Island

Then it was time to make my move towards the ferry. I had arranged to go to the cricket that afternoon with Davo and long lost cousin Leigh.

The drive back to the ferry was more of the same, magnificent scenery and well maintained dirt roads… lots of fun :)

The Mirambeena vehicular ferry docks at Bruny Island.

It turned out to be a great day for cricket at Bellerive Oval… sunny weather, great crowd and I got to meet a cousin for the first time. Tassie lost to Victoria in the 20Twenty match… but it was still a great way to spend a few hours on a Sunday arvo, and at only $12 entry, great value for money! After the cricket I heading back to Eaglehawk Neck.

-)

HOWZAT!!! Is he out? You be the judge :-)

Next day I decided to head to an area on the Tasman Peninsular called The Coal Mines. This is an area where convicts used to mine coal. What’s left is relics of convict built buildings. It free to have a look around. It is well presented and well maintained. Definitely worth a visit.

My next big adventure was fishing! I booked myself on a fishing charter with Doongara Fishing Charters. I arrived at the Pirates Bay jetty at 7.30 am and joined a middle aged couple from SA, a biker type dude from WA and two best mates from QLD.

The weather was shocking… wind, rain, about a 1-2 metre swell, but we persisted. We ventured down the coast towards Cape Hauy near The Totem Pole and the Candlestick and bottom fished in numerous areas. Unfortunately the weather was keeping all the nice fish away. However as the day progressed, the weather came good, and so did the fishing! I double hooks a Parrot fish & a small Gurnard. Both had to go back though… Parrot fish taste like shit and the Gurnard was to small.

After we had all caught a couple of nice sized Gurnard and towards the end of the trip, I caught the fish of the day. I nice sized Perch. Yay me!!!  :)   It was my dinner the following evening.

-)

Fish of the day... a nice Perch :-)

New years eve was fast approaching, and I had no concrete plans. David was heading to the Falls Festival, so I asked Leigh, my newly found cousin what he was up to. He had not plans either, but said for me to come over anyway and see what happens.

At this point I will say, ask no questions, get told no lies. It was a great night. I had a ball… what I can remember of it :)

The next few days I basically spent recovering from new years eve and taking photos around Eaglehawk Neck for my Eaglehawk Neck website.

It was then time to sadly depart Tassie and head back for the rat race this is Sydney. I can’t wait to return tp Tassie… and it will be much sooner than I anticipated!!… more of that later.

I’ve Been to Tassie Too!! part 1

•January 13, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Yes.. it’s been a while since my last blog entry. But shit happens :)

I finally went back to Tassie for 2 weeks over the Xmas/New Year break.

What a refreshing place Tassie is… I fell in love with it all over again…..

Anyway… from the start.

I got to Sydney airport with heaps of time to spare, but I was still VERY nervous. Not about the flying part, but the ‘will I fit in the seat’ syndrome had been wreaking havoc with my nerves for weeks. Part of me even thought that I would not be able to board!

After forking out $36 for being 4 kilos over my 23 kilo luggage allowance I finally got on the plane. During the online check-in procedure the day before, I was able to pick a window seat in the 4th row of seats… there are 3 seats either side of the aircraft.

I get to my seat and I find that the arm rest’s can be lifted. This made me feel alot better. If the unlucky people occupying the seats next to me are of an average stature, there should be no issues. Then they arrive. A young couple. I apolagise straight away, but they seem ok. Plenty of room.

After take off I start to watch my portable media player (catching up on episodes of Heroes), and then I notice that the couple next to me have gone!! I dont know where they went, but I had three seats to myself!!! I was not complaining… SWEET!

The 90 minute flight to Hobart flew by (boom boom). Next thing I know I’m at Hobart airport…. the first thing I notice as I walked out of the aircraft and down the stairs to the tarmac was the smell… the fresh air. No pollution, no humidity. Bliss!

I greet my brother David who was waiting for me at the airport. After collecting my luggage we head to his place in his bright yellow V8 Kombi… it’s a real beast!!

Davo & his Kombi

Davo & his Kombi

David was kind enough to let me borrow his Suzuki Sierra for the duration of my visit. Yes, it was a little cramped for me, but I soon adjusted and found ways of making myself comfortable.

That little red Zook… was a great vehicle. I don’t know what David has done to it, but anything above 4000 revs she loves… more on that later.

I left David at his bachelor pad and started my journey in the Zook towards Eaglehawk Neck.

Eaglehawk Neck is about an hours drive from Hobart… and an eternity from the hustle & bustle of Sydney. I can’t quite put my finger on what it is about this area that attracts me so much. It is just so laid back and calm. In fact the whole Tasman & Forestier Peninsulas area is the same. If I could get work in the area, I could quite easily live there. No dramas at all.

After a quite Christmas Day with my Tassie family (which included a seafood buffet lunch at the Lufra Hotel) on Boxing Day I was off to Bruny Island for two nights.

With the Tassie Family... Xmas Day at The Lufra Hotel.

With the Tassie Family... Xmas Day at The Lufra Hotel.

Me being me, I was running a little late by the time I arrived at Kettering to catch the vehicular ferry across to Bruny Island. However I found that every man and his dog was also running late, as the line up to board the ferry meant a 2hr wait. But it did not worry me. I was so relaxed, even passing the time by listening to the Hip Hop CD David had left in the Zook was becoming enjoyable!!

On the ferry to Bruny Island.

After the 20min crossing of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel, I disembarked the ferry and started the drive to my accommodations at Adventure Bay, on the eastern shore on the south island.

45mins later I arrived at Adventure Bay Eco Village. What a delightful place. Located right at the southern end of Adventure Bay. Even though I could not see the surf, I could hear it. I love that sound. The cabin was small… just the one room, containing 1 single & 1 double bed, a bar fridge and a sink. There was a kettle for making tea & coffee.. the usual kind of stuff.

There was a communal kitchen which had all the mod cons, so it got me thinking… I needed to cook myself dinner, but that was tomorrow night.

There was also a toilet/shower/laundry block. Showers were coin operated, 5mins for $1.00.

My accommodation on Bruny Island.

After unpacking and making myself at home I waisted no time in heading out to explore the island. I only had a rough tourist map, but it sent me in the right direction… and that was dirt logging roads. The Zook loved it!!! (and so did I).

2 hours later I found myself on the western side of the island, and came across the Bruny Island Hotel, which as it turns out is the southern-most pub in Australia. It was getting late, the sun was about to set, so I thought what a better way to spend sunset on Boxing Day, than to have a (Tasmanian) beer at the southern-most pub in Australia… and it was a glorious sunset! Could life get any better?

Sunset, Boxing Day at the Bruny Island Hotel.

Sunset, Boxing Day at the Bruny Island Hotel.

I then headed back to Adventure Bay via another route, doing my best to drive every road I could on the island.

The following morning Coco Pops was on the menu for breakfast, follow by some English muffins with ham. I decided that I would head down to the Cape Bruny Light House, which is more or less on the southern-most tip of Bruny Island. I found another route to travel across the Island and made it there in time for a morning tea break on the side of the road while enjoying the magnificent views… simply breathtaking.

Cape Bruny Light House.

Little Red Zook on Cape Bruny, looking towards The Friars.

I then heading back to the Bruny Island Hotel for another quiet Tassie beer, taking in the views, watching life go by while sucking in that fresh Tassie air… I really could get used to this.

I decided to head back to Adventure Bay (via yet another route) and get some supplies for making dinner in the camp kitchen. I headed to the General Store at Adventure Bay to see what they had to offer. My stomach was telling me that Chicken Boscaiola should be on the menu… and I was lucky enough to find all the ingredients I needed. I must say I really did out do myself… it was a superb meal. Even had enough left over to have on toast for breakfast the next morning.

3 Years Have Passed….

•December 3, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Today is the 3rd anniversary of the passing of my best mate Ben Manton… due to a bike accident in the Royal National Park in Sydney.

His passing left such a huge hole in my life… such that I don’t feel it will ever be filled.

I really could have done with his council over the past 12 months… the D&M’s we used to have would have been held very regularly… along with copious amounts of bourbon, I can guarantee that much.

Right now I’m holding back the tears. No… they are flowing now!!

I really have felt so lonely since you departed.

To say I miss you is such an understatement.

Ben... in his element, at our last D&M night in the week before he passed away. Hes on the phone to Shaun while drinking one of MY bourbons!!

Ben... in his element, at our last D&M night in the week before he passed away. He's on the phone to Shaun while drinking one of MY bourbons!!

This is how I will always remember my best mate…. always willing to give up his time for you… always have a shoulder to lean on… always willing to give a hug when it was needed.

You are in my thoughts every day my friend.

I miss you!

I’m going to include the song and lyrics for one of Bens favourite songs. It needs no introduction

Copperhead Road
Steve Earle

Well my name’s John Lee Pettimore

Same as my daddy and his daddy before
You hardly ever saw Grandaddy down here
He only came to town about twice a year
He’d buy a hundred pounds of yeast and some copper line
Everybody knew that he made moonshine
Now the revenue man wanted Grandaddy bad
He headed up the holler with everything he had
It’s before my time but I’ve been told
He never came back from Copperhead Road

Now Daddy ran the whiskey in a big block Dodge
Bought it at an auction at the Mason’s Lodge
Johnson County Sheriff painted on the side
Just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside
Well him and my uncle tore that engine down
I still remember that rumblin’ sound
Well the sheriff came around in the middle of the night
Heard mama cryin’, knew something wasn’t right
He was headed down to Knoxville with the weekly load
You could smell the whiskey burnin’ down Copperhead Road

I volunteered for the Army on my birthday
They draft the white trash first,’round here anyway
I done two tours of duty in Vietnam
And I came home with a brand new plan
I take the seed from Colombia and Mexico
I plant it up the holler down Copperhead Road
Well the D.E.A.’s got a chopper in the air
I wake up screaming like I’m back over there
I learned a thing or two from ol’ Charlie don’t you know
You better stay away from Copperhead Road

My Dream Home

•November 21, 2008 • Leave a Comment

While researching my trip to Tassie I decided to have a look and see what the house market is like down there. I know I will eventually buy I house, so why not have a look at the market.

After looking for houses I would be able to afford, I started looked at what was at the other end of the scale… and I came upon this beauty!!

I will supply the link to the website, but that will eventually go away, so I’m going to provide the detail within this post. Here is the link.

Modern design generously proportioned

Offers over $590,000

42 SPINNAKER CRESCENT, TRANMERE
Features: Double glazed windows throughout, Reverse cycle ducted heat system, Mountain and water views.
  • Ultra modern design, generously proportioned living spaces and panoramic views across the Derwent River to Mount Wellington are just a tease of this magnificent home.
  • Inside the home offers some 28 squares of living space with huge open plan living area which takes in the full panorama and an additional rumpus room downstairs.
  • The kitchen is extremely well appointed, with a surplus amount of siltstone bench tops, loads of cupboard space, soft touch drawers and quality appliances.
  • The accommodation on offer is excellent with four double bedrooms, the master which opens on to the deck, has a walk in robe and en-suite.
  • There are two other bathrooms, with the upstairs bathroom having a deep stylish spa bath and separate powder room.

This home represents excellent value with what is on offer in a fast growing new homes area and is well worth inspecting.

So… it looks great, it’s in a prime location (that view!) and only 20mins from Hobart. If there was a downside it would be the slope on the block… but apart from that, I love this place!!!
One can but only dream.

Well… not a proper movie critic… but I am going list the movies I would like to go and see over the next few months tell you all what I think of them.

Here is the list:
